SEOMike to Speak at Vegas Pubcon 2012

Saturday, May 26th, 2012

I’ve been asked by the folks at Pubcon to speak at the Vegas Pubcon again this year.  I’m excited for another opportunity and know I’ll get on some interesting panels.  My favorite part is the Speaker Enclave.  It’s a pre-conference event exclusively for the world-class Pubcon speakers where the latest SEO / SEM issues are discussed.  I’ve very lucky to be a part of the conversation and am quite grateful that they put on such an event.

Come see me!  Pubcon Vegas 2012

SEOMike Speaks at MU

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

I had an opportunity to speak to a class at the University of Missouri in Columbia last week and it was a really good time.  I spoke to a class of journalism students about what SEO is as well as what easy things can be done to help search engines index a site.  I spent a lot of the time showing them heatmaps of how people view search engine results and webpages.  I also gave tips that will help them write effective news articles, and place links, pictures, and ads in their articles, as well as advertise their businesses on other sites.  The students ate up the information and a lot of them took two pages worth of notes.  I had a good time and hope I get the opportunity to speak at a college again soon!

SEOMike Article in KC Small Business Magazine

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

I wrote an article about the importance of claiming your local business listing in Google, Yahoo! and Bing for the September issue of KC Small Business. It was a fun yet challenging process.  The most difficult part was keeping my article short.

Google Will Spoon-Feed Your News

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

A story I found today made it on the homepage of Webmasterworld.com. I love it when that happens. Thewrap.com interviewed Eric Schmidt, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Google. In the interview Eric said “In about six months, [Google] will roll out a system that will bring high-quality news content to users without them actively looking for it.” Also, Google believes it will be able to sell premium ad space with this content. This is huge. Google is taking steps to be a major player in the news industry – an industry whose print model is failing. The timing is perfect. The AP has been complaining about websites needing to pay for the use of AP news on their sites. The demands for compensation is alienating site owners… guess who will step up to the plate? Yep. The more scary thing… how will the AP be able to compete as their online and print news delivery models fail? Will they still be able to afford to pay a preimum to reporters? Could they afford to out-bid Google?! Yep. Now you’re getting it. Google employs the reporters. Google decides based on your profile’s history what kind of news you’re interested in. Google runs ads along with their news to subsidise the program. Progress? Sure. Big Brother getting bigger? Yep. Brace yourselves for the Google News Channel. Kidding. (Kinda) (Read Thewrap.com article) (See the Webmasterworld.com thread)

SEW Mentions SEOMike

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Things have been really hectic in my life lately. I guess it’s the post-holiday rush. Lots of things happening. My to-do list is written on my office window and is about 3 feet long. Ugh.

On a good note, I was recently mentioned in a Search Engine Watch article by my friend Mark Jackson.  I spotted a test of changes in the Google SERPs and pointed it out to Mark who wrote an article about the changes and the potential impact they could have. Check it out here. I like showing up in an article every-now-and-again, but like to mostly lay low so people don’t get too familiar with my techniques.
